Jewelry

How should I care for/clean my jewelry?

Gold Filled Jewelry: gold filled metal is comprised a layer of solid gold — generally at least 5% of the piece’s weight — that is mechanically bonded to a strong, mixed-metal base. It is less prone to chipping, fading, and tarnishing than gold-plated jewelry, and can last a lifetime with proper care.

-Avoid wearing jewelry in chemical-rich environments, especially hot tubs and pools.

-Keep jewelry away from perfumes, hairsprays, scented lotions, and sunscreen.

-Remove jewelry when exercising, as chemicals released by sweat may react with the alloy.

-If jewelry become tarnished, wipe down with a jewelry cloth and/or gently scrub with a toothbrush and soapy water.

14k Gold Jewelry: 14k gold is one of the most durable alloys and is not prone to tarnishing. If the metal appears dull, wipe down with a jewelry cloth and/or gently scrub with a toothbrush and soapy water.

Stones: All stones and pearls are organic material that should be treated with care. Avoid any contact with hard surfaces and remove stone jewelry while exercising as a best practice. We use drilled beads for many of our designs - should the drill hole collect debris over time, soak in hot water and soap to loosen, then use a toothbrush to clean throughout the hole.

-Opals: opals are extremely soft and porous stones, which means that they absorb moisture. Be careful not to wear opals in any water, during exercise or excessive sweat, or in extremely humid climates as these conditions can result in discoloration or cracking.

-Pearls: to maintain your pearl’s natural lustre, avoid chemicals and salt water with wear as they will dull the pearl’s nacre (outermost layers).

Are your earrings sold in pairs?

All Mary MacGill earrings are sold in pairs unless clearly stated in the product description.

Can I purchase extra earring backs?

Yes, you can purchase extra earring backs (metal or silicone) for $5 plus shipping. Please email us with inquiries.

Can you send me photos of available pieces before I make a purchase?

Due to the small size of our team, we’re not able to send photos to customers before purchase or shipment. All of our stones are unique and may differ slightly from that pictured, but are carefully chosen and will be similar. Please see the Returns and Exchanges section to check if your desired item is eligible for a return or exchange before placing your order.

Engagement

What does working together on a custom project look like?

It begins with scheduling an appointment with us (virtually, or in person in our Germantown, NY showroom). Filling out the questionnaire ahead of your appointment helps us prepare more fully for our meeting. At both in-person and virtual meetings, we’ll go over your questionnaire and discuss timeline, preferences, and discuss what working together looks like a little more fully.

If you’re meeting with us in-person, let us know if there are specific rings you’d like to see in person so we can have them ready. Meetings where you’re able to come in person tend to expedite the process – sometimes couples unexpectedly walk away from their meeting with us with a ring in-hand! But more commonly it’s just a wonderful opportunity to try rings on, get a sense for our settings, ask any questions, and start to confront your preferences. We show both ready made and loose (i.e. unset) stones during these meetings. We recommend taking photos and videos so you can review later. We’ll follow up within a few days with a proposal of the options you were most drawn to – this will include photos, pricing and stone information.

After virtual appointments, we follow up within a week to 10 days with an initial proposal, though this can take a little more time if we need to source a specific stone for your project. Proposals can feature both ready-made rings and loose stones. From there, it’s usually a back and forth; sometimes an additional diamond or two needs to be sourced from a vendor, sometimes we need to go back to the drawing board, but more often than not we send as many additional photos and videos as gets the stone’s essence across until a choice has been made.

With both virtual and in-person modalities, once a stone or ring choice has been made, we ask for a 50% deposit. Once paid, the ring goes into production which takes 4-5 weeks for loose stones, or 3-4 weeks for ready-made rings that just require a re-size. While we do our best to accommodate expedited timelines, it’s not always possible. If there is a particular date you are hoping to have your project completed by, please let us know during your consultation. Once the ring is complete, we’ll send you an invoice for the remainder and go over shipping or pick-up options. All our engagement rings come with one of our custom wooden ring boxes, any relevant diamond information, and we can provide a complimentary jewelery appraisal upon request.

Do you offer a warranty?

Yes, Mary MacGill offers a one year warranty on our engagement rings which will cover the cost of any damages that are a result of manufacturing. If pieces are noticeably bent, show improper care, or are damaged in any other manner that is not a result of faulty ring production, repairs will be performed at cost. Outside of our warranty, we offer repairs for a fee.

Our warranty covers tightening of our setting, but it does not cover loss of stone. During your warranty period and after, if your stone falls out and you are able to find it, we can re-set it for you (this has never happened but it's good to cover all our bases!). If your stone falls out and is lost, process a claim with your jewelry insurance provider with your appraisal to arrange a replacement. We are happy to provide any necessary information required by your provider.

What sort of repairs are commonly needed?

Because rings are typically worn everyday and thus subject to all your movements, it’s not uncommon for stones to come loose at some point throughout their lifetime, and it's no cause for tremendous concern. You can check for a loose stone by holding it up to your ear and gently wiggling it with your finger – if you can hear it rattling, it's loose. If you notice that’s the case, stop wearing your ring and let us, or another trusted jeweler know. We’d be happy to tighten your setting for you for a fee.

You might also need your ring resized down the line – sometimes our fingers change size after life and body shifts (pregnancy being the most common). If you need your engagement ring re-sized, it costs $50 and takes 3-4 weeks.

Do you offer insurance?

No, we do not offer insurance, though we recommend it by either expanding your homeowners policy to include jewelery coverage, or purchasing a new policy (Jewelers Mutual or Lavalier ) to cover possible threats such as theft, accidental damage or loss. Contact Marion to receive a complimentary ring appraisal if you haven’t received it already.

How should I care for my MM Engagement Ring?

Our rings are designed to be worn everyday, and crafted with care. That being said, because our bands and setting are on the thinner side when it comes to engagement rings, they require proper care to avoid being misshapen or bent. To have your ring last your whole life, we recommend removing it for high-impact activities like rock climbing, surfing, lifting weights, or even gardening if you’re working with rocks. The more the diamond/stone is ‘dinged’, the more likely it is to come loose in its setting (though it should not fall out unless by a serious trauma). We also recommend taking your ring off if you’re entering any chemical-rich environment (hot tubs, hot springs, cleaning with bleach or other harsh chemicals). On the conservative side of jewelry care are recommendations to also remove your rings when showering, sleeping, applying make-up or perfumes, and when doing the dishes, as products can build up in the settings and diminish the appearance of the ring.

14k yellow gold does not tarnish, but its color can dull over time. We recommend cleaning it every few months with either a soap and toothbrush, or an ultrasonic cleaner (this is the one we use in our studio).

How durable is the stone or diamond in my engagement ring?

Knowing how hard or soft your engagement ring gemstone is will help you know how to take proper care of it. Precious stones are ranked in ascending levels of hardness from 1 to 10 on the Mohs scale, though the Mohs scale is not necessarily linear – it grades gems on a relative scale based on their scratch hardness; so although a Sapphire is a 9, a diamond at 10 is many times harder. But there are also many other factors than just hardness that determine a stone’s durability. Ability to withstand wear, heat, light, chemicals and low or high humidity are also important factors to take into account when choosing which stone is right for you and your lifestyle.

Clear diamonds are a 10 on the Mohs scale, being among the hardest materials on earth. They’re so hard that they might damage adjacent jewelery, especially if that jewelry features a softer stone.

Mineral diamonds (also called a “rustic” diamond) are not as hard as investment grade diamonds, but they’re still a 10 on the Mohs hardness scale. However, the amount and type of inclusions in your diamond can affect how durable your diamond is (more inclusions mean a less durable diamond). If an inclusion is on the edge of your diamond, there is a greater chance for chippage if seriously jostled.

Sapphires are a 9 on the Mohs scale, making them great for daily wear with the right care. After diamonds, they’re among the most durable of gemstones, and don’t typically pose concern to wearers.

Tourmalines are a 7-7.5 on the Mohs hardness scale, making them reasonably hard and still a good choice for daily wear with correct care.

What are mineral diamonds?

Mineral diamonds have always been around, but because the jewelery market only marketed one type of diamond as valuable for so long (colorless, industrial grade), they were virtually value-less and ground down to make drill bits and other diamond-encrusted machinery. However, there’s been increasing interest in them in the past few decades due to their unique qualities. Every mineral diamond is a truly one-of-a-kind piece, and offers wearers a more grounded alternative to clear cut diamonds.

The colors in mineral diamonds come from literal minerals that were present in the Earth’s crust when the diamond formed. The minerals blend with the diamond molecules, resulting in impurities or “inclusions”. The yellow color in mineral diamonds comes from inclusions of Nitrogen, while blue and grey colors come from Boron. The green color comes from natural irradiation of the stones under the Earth. Mineral diamonds are always untreated, unheated, and cannot be made in a lab.

What is your “floating” setting?

Customers can think of Mary’s signature floating setting as a blend between a bezel and a prong set. Both classic settings she respected, but didn’t love working with for particular reasons (prongs have a tendency to get caught on sweaters and hair, and bezel can be gold-heavy). Our floating setting is a thin, but sturdy hand-built frame of gold around the stone, and has open sides. This allows for the most amount of light to filter in, and reflect off the stone. The band of all our floating rings is 1.6mm thick, and we make all our rings with 14k yellow gold.

Do you work with any other settings or metals?

We like to work within the design language of our floating setting, but we are open to setting customer’s stones in a prong set if they wish. We also can make your piece in platinum, rose gold, and 18k gold. Please email Marion for quotes.

I don’t know my, or my partner’s ring size. How should I find that out?

The easiest (and most reliable) way to find out a ring size is to stop by a local jewelry store. They’ll usually size you quickly and for free. If you’re doing this process covertly and don’t know your partner’s ring size, first check with their parent or trusted friend (sometimes they contain the knowledge!). If that’s a no-go, check to see if your partner wears a ring on their ring finger (either hand), and if so, if they ever take it off. You can covertly bring it to be sized if they leave it behind for the day. If they wear the ring that you’re checking the size of on their right hand, it's probably about half size larger than their ring finger on their left hand. Lastly, if you really don’t know, go with a 6 – it’s the most common size for a women’s ring finger. And if it doesn’t fit quite right, we can always resize it down the line for you : )

How do you ship your engagement rings?

We ship all our engagement rings via FedEx Express, and require all packages to be signed for by an adult. If working together on a ring project, we’ll let you know when the ring is complete and ready to be shipped, and ship based on the date that’s best for you to receive the package. We’ve shipped engagement rings to offices, best friend’s houses, mother’s homes – it’s up to you! We can also use an alias in the return address if your partner is familiar with our brand.

Does my engagement ring come with a ring box?

Yes, all our engagement rings come in one of our branded wooden ring boxes, available in either black walnut or cherry.

I have a family diamond or ring that I’d like to work with for my engagement ring. Does Mary MacGill do that?

Yes, we do offer resetting services, though only into our floating setting. The current cost for unsetting a ring and resetting it in our floating setting is $2,000, and takes 3-4 weeks to complete. We’ll return your original setting to you with your finished piece (we’re unable to reuse it or ‘melt it down’). Before working with your ring, we’ll have you sign a resetting agreement, which states that you’re aware, and assume the risks involved in resetting a ring. Sometimes, when resetting a stone, damage may be revealed that the stone had previously incurred and was hidden, or held together by the original setting. There is also potential for a pre-owned stone to chip during Mary MacGill’s production process. The more a stone is worked with, the more susceptible it is to damage. The agreement establishes that the customer assumes the risk for potential damage and that we’re not responsible for any damage incurred to the stone during the resetting process. We highly recommend that you get your stone appraised and insured before bringing it to us to be reset.

I love a one-of-a-kind ring but it’s sold out. Will it be restocked?

Unfortunately, no. All of our engagement rings (except for our easily replicable rings like our lab grown emerald cut floating ring and our lab grown egg shaped floating ring) feature unique stones and diamonds that can’t be replaced. But we do have a large stock of diamonds and stones that we pull from for custom and stock pieces, so if you love something, let us know and we might have something similar.

Can I return my Mary MacGill engagement ring?

Ready made rings purchased online that we have not resized for you are eligible for returns under our normal returns policy. But custom rings, or rings that have been resized, are not eligible for returns.

Where do you source your diamonds? How do I know that my diamond is “conflict free”?

Mary hand selects all our diamonds and engagement stones at the Tucson Gem Show each year, which she’s been to annually now for almost a decade, maintaining relationships with trusted vendors, and exploring new ones. For our engagement pieces, we shop exclusively at the AGTA show, which has one of the strictest codes of ethics in the jewelry industry. All its members (vendors) must ensure fair business practices and transparency, and prove compliance with laws and regulations ensuring responsible sourcing of gemstones (ensuring gemstones are not sourced using child labor and that mining practices protect the environment and the health of workers). We stand by AGTA’s code of ethics and feel confident in their ethical priorities.. And by default, lab grown diamonds are conflict free, making them an attractive candidate for folks especially concerned with a diamond’s origin story.

What is a ‘lab grown’ diamond? Why do you offer both lab grown and mined diamonds?

Lab-grown diamonds are created by replicating the natural diamond formation process in a controlled laboratory setting, using either the High Pressure High Temperature (HPHT) or Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD) method. Both methods start with a small diamond seed and build upon it by adding carbon atoms under specific conditions of pressure, temperature, and gas composition. Both processes can take several weeks, with the rough diamonds then cut and polished into the desired shape and size.

Generally, yes! It depends on our stone inventory, so email us with the product details and we’ll let you know if it’s possible. For some styles, we may request that you mail your single earring to our studio so we can most accurately match it. Earring matches cost half the price of the pair, and customers are responsible for all shipping costs.
